Facebook is the largest social media platform in the world.
It now boasts of over 1.8 billion users worldwide and chances are, your customers are spending some of their time on Facebook.
To get more customers and clients, you need to meet them where they are and that means having some sort of presence on Facebook as a business.
If you’re wondering what the advantages are of having a Facebook Page over your regular Facebook profile that you use to connect with your family and friends, read this article where I explain the pros and cons.
In this article, I will take you through how to set up a Facebook Page for your business.
The first thing you need to do is create a Facebook Fan Page for your business if you don’t already have one.
Here are the steps to do this:
Step 1: Go To Facebook.com
Step 2: Create A Page
If you are signed in, this is where you want to go:
If you’re not signed in, this is where you want to go:
Immediately after this, you’ll be prompted to sign in or sign up (if you don’t already have a facebook account)
Step 3: Select Page Type
Facebook has 6-page types that you can select from:
- A Local Business or Place
Of course, as the name implies, this is the type of page you open for a Local Business or place. This page is perfect for restaurants, boutiques, bakeries, etc.
There are various categories you can choose from ranging from Arts & Entertainment Centres to Bookstores to Library to Spas, name it. There are tons of options there you can choose from.
I always say, no one knows your business better than you and so, you know what category fits you best.
I suggest this type of page for small-scale businesses. If you run your own business mainly by yourself or with a few staff, this is the type of page you want to go for.
*For The Local Business Page Type, you’ll need to provide a bit more information like Business Address and Phone Number.*
- A Company, Organisation or Institution
This is the type of page I would suggest for medium to large scale companies.
There are also various categories you can choose from like Banks, Churches, Middle Schools, NGO’s etc.
- Brand or Product
This is type of page you want if you’re promoting a particular brand or product.
This is perfect for Clothing brands, furniture, foods, and beverages etc.
- Artist, Band or Public Figure
If the page you’re putting up is to promote you as an individual or a group of people as individuals, this is the type of page that’ll work best for you.
As always, there’s an option to pick a category.
If you’re a Chef, News Personality, Actor/Actress, Comedian, Designer, Entrepreneur, Coach, Speaker etc, this page type is perfect for you.
If you have an album, book, movie, sports team, tv show etc that you want to promote, this page type will work for you.
- Cause or Community
If you have a cause that you want to promote like say, “Save all the Dogs” or you want to start a community dedicated to a particular interest like “Dog Lovers”, then this is the type of page you want to create.
This is the only page type that does not give the option of choosing a category. You just simply type in the name of your page and that’s it.
As I said before, no one knows your business, product or service better than you and so, you know what page type and category fits you best.
Ok. Back to setting up your fan page.
Whatever page type you decide is right for you, you’ll be prompted to select a category and Page Name.
Now your page name is the name people will see once they hit your page.
Here’s an example:
Step 4: Page Details
Enter in here a brief description of your page and your website. This will help improve your page rankings in search.
You’ll also choose a unique web address to make it easier for people to find your page.
That is easier for people to remember than the default which is just a bunch of letters and numbers.
Step 5: Select A Profile Picture
You can select a profile picture by uploading one from your computer or importing one from a website.
If you’re opening a page for a small business you run or a business that is centered around you, I advise you upload a personal picture. People want to connect with people. They want to know that there is a human being on the other end of the line.
However, if you’re opening a page for a business that is not really centered around you but around the company’s brand or a product, you can use the company logo or product picture.
Step 6: Add to favourites?
Facebook gives you the option to add your new page to favorites. That way, you can access your new page easily from your facebook menu.
Step 7: Reach More People
Facebook knows the next thing is to reach more people and tell them about your new page and so, they encourage you to create an ad.
We’ll get into more details of how you can create an ad to get more fans in the next section.
But that’s it. You have your brand new Facebook Page.
Here’s a video I created a while back that works you through the entire process:
